President Theodore Roosevelt felt that the coinage of the United States was inferior when compared to the best designs of many foreign nations. He believed that a nation as great as the United States should have a currency reflecting that greatness and to rectify the situation, he arranged for Augustus Saint-Gaudens – considered one of the greatest sculptors of the time – to redesign America’s coinage.

Description

President Theodore Roosevelt felt that the coinage of the United States was inferior when compared to the best designs of many foreign nations. He believed that a nation as great as the United States should have a currency reflecting that greatness and to rectify the situation, he arranged for Augustus Saint-Gaudens – considered one of the greatest sculptors of the time – to redesign America’s coinage. This was one of only two coin designs Saint-Gaudens completed before his death. Two varieties exist, the No Motto of 1907-1908 and the Motto (In God We Trust) variety of 1908-1933. Coins were produced at the Philadelphia, San Francisco and Denver mints.
